Dr. Eleblu holds a PhD degree in Plant Biotechnology at the University of Paris Sud, Orsay in France where he learnt how to speak French and became aware of French Culture. He was trained as an Agriculturist at the undergraduate level with specialization in Crop Science at the University of Ghana. At the post-graduate level, he specialized in Genetics and Breeding at the University of Ghana. He won the African Scientist Award and served as a Visiting Research Scientist under the African Research Fellowship of the Institute for Genomic Diversity (IGD), Cornell University where he managed a research project on the genetic contributions of PINNOID genes in Maize plant and kernel architecture development (Cornell University, 2007 – 2008). In 2014, After John was awarded the PhD in France, John worked as a post-doctoral scientist in the lab of his PhD supervisor, Dr. Abdelhafid Bendahmane. His post-doctoral studies involved analysis of gene expression to understand the molecular basis of parthenocarpy (seedlessness) in tomatoes at the famous Crop Genomics laboratory (located at INRA, URGV in France).
Before leaving Ghana for studies at Institute for Genomic Diversity in the USA, John helped in the development of the curriculum and the innovative 5-year Plant Breeding programme, the re-design of an abandoned house that later served as the offices and lecture rooms of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI). Upon his return to Ghana in 2014, he was appointed a Visiting Scientist at the WACCI. In February 2015, John became a Lecturer at the Biotechnology Centre, University of Ghana where he continues to teach and impact the next generation of future leaders, the youth. Currently, John is the Coordinator of Research Programmes, Francophone Africa for WACCI. As a scientist John has contributed to the publication of scientific research works in internationally recognized journals with a book chapter to his credit. He has aided in the wining of four grants at WACCI. He has personally also won four outstanding grants/fellowships [USDA Norman Borlaug Fellowship, Alcorn State University, 2016; French Government Scholarships, France 2009; University of Ghana Faculty Development Grant, 2009; African Scientist Fellowship Programme, Cornell University (IGD) 2007] that have greatly aided and quickened his career development and progression. Dr. Eleblu has been involved in the establishment of WACCI as a world class African Centre of Excellence in training Plant Breeders and Seed Scientists. As the Coordinator in charge of Resource Mobilisation, Partnerships and Visibility of WACCI in 2015, John led the development of a Centre commissioned 10-year Resource Mobilisation Strategic Plan currently functional at the Centre. He was also part of the drafting of a 5-year Strategic Action Plan for WACCI. John was instrumental in the structuring, planning and the development of the curriculum and academic programmes and a review of the facilities for the newly launched Eastern University of Sustainable Development in Somanya, Eastern Region of Ghana.
Research Interest
The genetic improvement of crops is a pivotal issue for the fight against food insecurity in Africa if the continent is to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. Having been trained to use the techniques of Biotechnology in crop improvement, I have set out to help develop tools for the genetic enhancement of crops through the use of chemical mutagenesis complemented by genomic approaches and advance phenotyping. Collaborative efforts will aid the development of my research themes in the area of:
- Genetic improvement and breeding of cucurbits
Legume and Cereal breeding for higher productivity and nutrient content
